Interview with Basbaas15. October 2012 23:43

TMX-Blog: Good evening, sooner than expected the winter will be here and the coldest days let you stay at home I guess. A time starts where I will build more maps than usually. When do you open your TM-editor to build a map?

Basbaas: I'm still spending a lot of time in the editor today. Not as much as I did about two years back, but I'm still really enjoying the editor and trying to come up with new creative stuff.

TMX-Blog: Do you open the editor and try to be creative or do you have an idea which makes you open the editor? ;)

Basbaas: Most of the time I open the editor with an idea in my head, either some transition or jump that I came up with and wanted to test out or I get inspired by for example a tech track, and wanting to build something stimular. Although I've had some times where I really had the urge to build and just let it happen in the editor itself.

TMX-Blog: Are you satisfied with your results? Some people always see space to improve, others say well done when they made a nice track. Which attitude has kept you in building? What is your motivation?

Basbaas: I believe that no track is perfect, every single builder has space to improve in my opinion, and obviously I'm no exeption. I think all of my tracks could use some improvement in some different aspects. The main thing that kept me building is seeing some people having fun of my tracks, which feels like a great accomplishment to me. Also the editor never gets old for me, I can easily spend three hours in a row building on something without getting bored, I'd nearly call it a drug of some sort!

TMX-Blog: You're active at TMUF-X and you know many of the environments well, every single one has its own blocks and many blocks even have different ways to drive and use them.. What do you think about people who blockmix or even mix the environments.. Is it an improvement or a lack of creativity? Or even more creative?

Basbaas: For blockmixing it depends, I don't mind blockmixing when it results in something really smooth, or when people come up with totally new jumps or transitions which weren't possible without blockmixing. Although I really dislike unnecessary mixing as scenery.
About enviroment mixing; I am a really big fan of enviroment mixing and I've made a lot envi mix tracks. I exactly remembered nitroguy enthusiastically showing me one of the first envimix maps and I was possitively blown away. So much more oppertunities were suddenly available (for building and driving), there has been so much amazing enviroment mix tracks built through the course of the year. Still loving it today.

TMX-Blog: So true, the possiblities are insane and an end is probably not visible, the people still build new great maps with new concepts. Many other games changed because the programmers developed the game.. TM was also developed by the community. What makes this community so special?

Basbaas: This is one of the most special communities I have ever encountered online. Everyone is really nice to eachother, not only in the TMX forums, but also from my experience in skype having talked to lots of different players from TMX. Also the great ammount of tracks on TMX amazes me, so many people are still actively releasing tracks by today, and every single track is different from eachother. I always love seeing new stuff being build, even though this game itself was released a long time ago, the possibilities are endless! That's what truly seperated this community from most other gaming communities.

TMX-Blog: I guess that's it for the moment, only one question is left: What makes TMUF-X more exciting than TMNF-X in your eyes?

Basbaas: TMNF has just one enviroment, while TMUF has six. I've always loved the concept of having lots of different enviroments, with all have a totally different physics and looks. Why stick with just one enviroment when you can have six! Ofcourse it totally depends on the player, as for myself I don't really like the physics of the stadium car (also I am a biiiig stadium n00b). But I love the stadium blocks itself, I've released quite a few stadium enviroment mixes.

TMX-Blog: Thanks for the interview Basbaas :) Have fun in future ;)

Basbaas: Yeah, you too! Thanks for having me! :D

Wake me up when..3. September 2012 21:26
Posted By: View User Profile Sky Permalink | Comments (9)

Hey Guys,

finally I decided how to go on with the blog post: Every monday you will receive a bigger Blog-Post with different topics, and maybe from time to time a little surprise ;-)

Here a little overview about the topics today:

#Community Question – Talking about the future of Trackmania

#A new month started – Time for the MTC!

#Random Stuff - # Superduper stuntcompo for swags, YOLO-edition! New Nadeo-Recs

Community Question

Again I asked a lot of people one or two questions. How does Trackmania look like in 2018? It was a "What if"-Question, no one knows if there will be a active TM-Community or a new TM-Game in 2018. What about the environments? The graphics? There are still many open questions, so I hope you guys will discuss the future of this game in the comments!

Infi: I do hope the game developers learn and make the borders for creativity disappear, which means they make it possible to change block's length, height and width and add more blocks, moving blocks and the possibilty to create own ones and mix everything with everything. Apart from that the game is awesome as it is, thus there's nothing more to add in my opinion.

Will you buy it? Depending on the activity of good old TMUF/NF- exchange, i'll decide whether to buy it or not.

Pascow: It's still the good old stadium with some new features and much better graphics and fixed driving-bugs.

Will you buy it? If I still have fun playing tm then, I'll buy it for sure.

dan!el: It's the ultimate hybrid of TMF and TM2. The most innovative feature of it - custom car characteristics for every track you make, so driving experience from each race is unique. Another game features are astonishing graphics and ultra realistic sounds.

Will you buy it? For sure I'll buy it!

Cephid: I can't say anything to the look, as I also was suprised by the look of Canyon. Will I buy it? That depends on the price, but probably yes. I would probably buy.

Enryx: For me it should have 2 Envis from TMUF, 2 from TM² and 2 new ones. Same TM spirit: no collisions between vehicles, Timeattack and round online matches/servers. TMUF modes (race stunt platform puzzle) and not a Maniaplanet-like organization (4 example you buy the game and you have the 6 envs, not like buying the 2nd/3rd/... env in the future).

Will you buy it? Before, I would try to get access to the closed beta (as I did for TM2), to free try the game, understand my feeling about the new envs, etc.
When beta is over it depends if I liked it or not, I'll buy it or not. If the game would be like I guessed (with "old" envs) I'd probably buy it (at least I'd play more those old envis than the new ones^^). If it's all brand new, it depends on my impressions (example: I didnt buy TM2 after betatesting, not my drive-style, etc etc ;/)

Lapos: I didn't buy TM2 cos there is no island car, and i won't buy any future versions of TM if there is no island car.

MoaraShira: Of course I would buy it.

!nFernOxid: A good question. If Nadeo release some more Tm's, what I really think, I hope they will release a new stadium version. With a Trackmania in the year 2018 I think there will be much more- and less buggy blocks in the editor and so mapper can use even more blocks for creative tracks. But all in all I don't think many things will be changed especially in the online game, because Nadeo want to keep the game ''for guys with skill''. Maybe some new maps with new blocks for offline hunting, that’s it.

Will you buy it? I don't think I'll buy the game. It's not because the game isn't my taste or something like that it's because in 6 years I'm 21 so I think I won't have time to play such a game even if it's great. Nevertheless I think we should us get surprised by Nadeo in the following years.

Pi | agent: Mhmm...thats a damn hard question. Already couldnt imagine how the trackmania 2 will be But yea..I hope it has same Stadium part in it. For me its the best of all in trackmania. Furthermore I think there could be new environments. But what for new environments? Mhm..Driving on planets? Moreover it should have new different blocks for the editor, a bigger selection. Also it would be great if there is an extra programm to mix own blocks. Yea..thats how I think a future version could look like And if I will buy it? Mhm..it would be great if there would be a free version of it, ofc with some restriction. And if I like it than and still drive tm I will buy it for sure!

Kadzio: Nadeo made a few "TrackMania" series and then a "United" version. It won't be a big surprise to see something like this. Now they made "TrackMania 2 Canyon", I expect something like "TrackMania 2 Offroad" and after some versions "TrackMania 2 United".

What is the worst scenario that can happen? In my opinion the worst scenario is that: Nadeo still makes "ShootMania" and does with it something like with "TrackMania".

Zogger: The worst scenario would be that they change the spirit of TM too much like they did with TM2 which I personally totally disliked. It would be cool though to have some more blocks and to be able to create blocks yourself. Also a "realtime multiplayer editor" would rly rock, so you could build tracks together at the same time.

What is the best scenario that may happen?

Fabio_m: Well I don't believe technology will envolve so much in 6 years but in the best case scenario if technology really evolves then it would be cool to see a virtual reality experience in trackmania, thing about some VR goggles and you siting on an hidraulic chair that gives you the same feeling as you would feel if you drove those cars Something like the movie tron but with tm cars would be great too.

Quat: Well, I don´t need a completely new Trackmania. An update like from TMN ESWC to Nations Forever would be great. This means, lots of new blocks, but no new driving-physics, maybe some new road- and platformblocks and so on. Trackmania and the Stadium Environment belong together as nothing else. Furthermore, they should optimize the graphics. I don´t need a TM with Crysis-graphics, but it often feels like TM doesn´t support my ATI-GPU, which means I have bad looking shadows, totally unconstant framerates (if VSync is disabled) and some minor graphic-problems.
All in all; I don´t need a new TM, but an update would be nice (hopefully earlier than 2018).

DrKris: I think the handling and speed are same, but graphics have become better, its very realistic. It would have rain, mist, sunshine cloudy weather, you can choose it when you have choosed the mood for the track. It would have more blocks to build a map and MT you can make much cooler too. I would like it like TMNF2 and TMUF2, then you only need to buy the TMUF2 so TMNF2 is free.

I agree with many opinions here and I'm glad to see so many views here. What is the best scenario that may happen for you? Do you think there will be an update or even a new stadium-mode? Actually there are many possibilities to make a better TrackMania, but the question which no one of us is able to answer (at least I think so :-D) is, if Nadeo is going to do something like this. I'm curious to see more thoughts in the comment section!

MTC:

5x5-Area was the theme of the last months MTC on TMUF where tracks must be built in a 5x5 area. The only limit on height was the editor limit. A difficult theme for sure, maybe even harder for environments like coast to build a nice map here, but creativity in Trackmania makes everything possible, ask Joost :-D 27 authors were inspired by this theme and created great new tracks. Only the judging process isn't finished yet, which is absolutly understandable by this huge amount of maps!

On TMNF the authors challenge was to build a track for the theme Contrast and you had to use contrasting surface changes/transitions in your track. Five submitted tracks are the result and congratulations to the winners Pascow & Shox with their duo-fullspeeder "/2estricted II"! In contrast to the TMUF-Exchange the low amount of participants this time is obvious, but hopefully this will change in the next month and we see more than 25 participants in both exchanges!

The theme for the MTC September in the TMNF-Exchange is "Flip it". So gogo, build and see your car spinning through the air!

Random Stuff:

*Zogger and Sapphiron are hosting a competition on TMNF-X randomly with funny challenges and great scoringsheets. This time it was called # Superduper stuntcompo for swags, YOLO-edition! and your task was to build a you-only-live-once-swag-scumbag-track. Three guys participated but these hilarious ideas deserve more attention :) Zogger decided that there is no winner this time. Who needs winners when you have SWAG#?

*Some new Nadeo-Records were uploaded in the last days in both exchanges. In TMUF-X Jadis, Jason and Reija drove records on the maps Puzzle A5, TMN Bonus A-3 and TMN Race G-0. Reija also drove a new WR on A06 Obstacle in the TMNF-Exchange, but racehans got it back just a few days later. So he got his 12th WR on a Nadeo-Map in TMNF back! Sick job!

That's it for today, live your life, you only die once, have a nice day,

Sky

With TrackMania 2 arriving in just over a years time, many players have speculated on what the game will have. One thing not many players have speculated on, is whether or not a brand new TMX will arrive. In response to that, all we can do is speculate on this idea.

If a new track exchange were to built or rebuilt. What would you like to see? E.g. - User Customizations, improved track manager. Your ideas and suggestions are welcome and will be added to the list below. Cool

• Further user customizations.
• An improved API with documentation.
• Online recommendation.
• Easier sort functions for track searches (Sortable quicklists).
• Multiple Authors
• Multiple Versions
• Improved Overall Site Design
• Multiple Screenshots
• User Favourites
• Optional Taging System
• Blog Edit Comments (lol)
• More Track Style Options.
• Live User Status (Online / Offline)
• Quick Track Pack Grouping
• Copper Count
• Multiple Language Chatrooms
• Improved or changed Awards System
• Cross linking tracks
• Individual User Stats
• Filter/search by'actual' file name, inc .GBX extension (GameBox)
• Batch downloading, select multiple tracks, group them and download many tracks with one click.
• Send multiple PM's to a group of users.
• Multiple user PM chat. (Chat with more than one person)
• Front Page news Comments.
• TM-Tube Video API.
• Certain player download only list.
• YouTube like Account Customizations.
• User Accoun Page Voting.
• Copyright protected tracks.

Just remember that this is pure speculation and no official word has been said.

Supporting TMX3. August 2009 11:59
Posted By: View User Profile Fastforza Permalink | Comments (15)

With TrackMania eXchange (TMX for short) being the best and most visited community website in TrackMania at no cost, there are a few things you could do in return of this free community service. I’ll explain them and how below.

An image or text based link

This type of support is similar to an advertisement, but is sometimes kept on a page, roughly at the top. Linking back to TMX provides further traffic to TMX, and shows that we as a community value its service and in exchange for that service, we’ll (the community)  put a viewable or readable image or text based link on our site linking back to TMX.

Copper Donations

Copper donating can come in handy when TMX has a few upcoming events. On a regular basis TMX may host an event or contest which may include coppers for a prize, donating coppers is another great way of supporting a TMX event or contest.

Money Donations

In this dark economical downturn, we must all be there for one another and provide support. You should follow this and donate some spare change to TMX to keep its service and community going, because without TMX there is no TrackMania. All donations made are put towards the hosting of TMX and give MrA a little break on the payment of the hosting. Donations can be made by clicking the PayPal button on the homepage of TMX, or click here.

Other Ways to Support TMX

- Being active in the TMX forums.

- Downloading tracks.

- Awarding and commenting one another's tracks.

I hope you consider a way to support TMX. :)

I know I’m supporting TMX, how about you?

Record-breaking MTC17. June 2009 11:44
Posted By: View User Profile Jozii Permalink | Comments (16)

As already posted in the front page news on the United exchange, this month’s MTC – Monthly Track Contest – has become larger than ever before. And now the contest is officially closed, so we have a final track count: 139 entries.

The MTC has existed for several years already across multiple TMX sites (the first being the old TMX Nations site, before Forever was released), but the previous record was only around 60 entries – less than half of what we have this month! Except a long judging period this time Tongue out

The reason for this new record, however, might be quite simple: an easy and unusually liked theme. The objective was to build tracks no longer than 15 seconds long – on any environment and of any type. No other limitations.

But still, the fact that 139 people pulled together and submitted a track is quite interesting. Who says the TM community is getting smaller?

To celebrate the record-breaking MTC, we’ve got more prizes to hand out than usual. Here’s what the 139 people who prticipated in the Unted MTC are competing for:

  • Overall winner: A showcase and a mug or teddy bear from the TMX Shop.
  • Top scoring in each environment: A mug or teddy bear.
  • Three random participants: 5000 coppers each.

On the Nations Forever exchange, where the MTC has only existed for a few months, we saw quite a good user participation rate too. We reached 40 entries this month, and that on a theme which was perceived as quite challenging (bouncing five times on water).

In July, the MTC will take a break on both sites. But we’ll be back again in August, and I hope to see you all enter the contest once again when that time comes. In the mean time, feel free to suggest new themes in the Suggestions threads (United and NationsWink

The Beta Area Experience13. June 2009 18:37
Posted By: View User Profile Jozii Permalink | Comments (4)

Our wonderful Beta Area (United version and Nations version) is a place I’ve hardly ever visited – until now! And even though I’ve always thought the idea to be decent, it wasn’t until now I realized its potential.

For those of you who don’t know, the idea is that you upload an unfinished track that you’re working on and start a forum topic. Others can then download the beta track and leave feedback in the forum thread. My original thought was that you can just ask a friend to beta test, but what if you don’t know a suitable person, or they say no? And even if you do, it turns out that there are some other nice ups to using the Beta Area.

First on the positive side, and most obvious, is the fact that you get feedback for your track. Potentially from several people with several different preferences and viewpoints. When I tried the area, I uploaded a track and started a topic (if you really want feedback, starting a topic is necessary – it’s not enough just to upload a track), and it didn’t take long at all until I had a response from someone who had tried the track and had comments on it.

Most active TMX users have already made friends on the site, and many ask others in person to beta test their tracks. However, this should not mean they shouldn’t use the Beta Area too. It’s likely that a third person will enter the picture and give feedback from a different point of view, or confirm the feedback of the original friend(s). The more the merrier!

Additionally, if several people comment on a track, having a thread in the Beta Area would be useful to start a discussion where several people can be involved, rather than doing everything one-on-one via PM.

A second positive aspect is the potential gain of an extra award or two. By uploading to the Beta Area first, more people are likely to play your track since the track is “new” twice, and thus award it once it’s actually released for real. If no one else, at least those who gave sincere feedback and whom you have talked to and discussed with during the building process are likely to leave an award in the end (unless they really don’t like the track, of course).

And thirdly, I really like the design of the Beta Area page – quick and easy access to everything, from uploading and downloading beta tracks to the forum threads in which to discuss the tracks, all in one convenient place.

On the downside, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of people commenting Beta Tracks. Odds appear to be good that you’ll get a comment at all, but getting it from several people might not be as usual. But then again, one person might be enough in most cases.

Last but not least, I’ve been trying to look a bit into why some tracks in the Beta Area haven’t received any feedback at all. I can’t really find a single common factor, but two things have come to my mind: those who have received no feedback at all have either uploaded several beta tracks or are fairly new to the website. In the first case, I guess people are put off by one person having several tracks. For the second case, I believe that if a track is too bad – a newbie track of the kind we’ve all built once upon a time – people won’t, for some reason, bother to leave a comment even if they’ve tried the track.

In any case, the Beta Area has some nice benefits, and any serious author should use it to make any new track as good as it gets. I’d love to see more people there as it allows us to collectively make our tracks better yet Cool

Write for TMX21. May 2009 22:54
Posted By: View User Profile Jozii Permalink | Comments (5)

Where I live, it’s holiday time! That means guests, fun, two crazy people behind me singing ABBA songs, and a lot of interesting stuff to do. But, it also means less time for games! And writing for TMX.

So, what do you say about bringing more of you reader’s into the “by the readers”-part of our tagline? I’m sure most of you have an idea for an article, guide or anything interesting you’d like to share with the rest of us.

So why not put your idea(s) into writing and e-mail the result to jozii89@gmail.com? A chance to be heard by the TM world. And don’t worry about grammar, spelling and such – that can be fixed! It would be thrilling to see what you can come up with :D

Track Statistics1. April 2009 22:35
Posted By: View User Profile Jozii Permalink | Comments (11)

Here’s something you may not have expected: there’s almost exactly the same number of tracks on the United exchange as there are on the TMNF exchange. If you find that too hard to believe, just look at these numbers:

  • TMNF: 77,487
  • United: 77,894

So does this mean that United is equally as popular as Nations Forever?

Well, not quite. The reason for this apparent equality is that the United exchange has already been running since TrackMania United was released, where as the TMNF exchange started with the Forever update. So what this means is that the number of TMNF tracks is about to soar past the united level at any moment, like the track express train that it is. (You could add the 130,000 or so TMN tracks onto the TMNF total if you wanted a true Nations total).

The TMX weekly upload stats show this more clearly:

  • TMNF uploads This Week: 2,315
  • TMNF uploads Per Day: 330
  • United uploads This Week: 904
  • United uploads Per Day: 129

Still, that United is recieving 1 upload for every 2.5 TMNF tracks isn't actually a bad activity rate, considering that TMNF is a free game for all to download. And, if after reading this you still feel that your tracks are just not getting the attention they should when you upload, try to be consolidated by the thought that only 10 of the 2,315, or 904 tracks eligable, can ever be in Best of the Week at once.

Another way to look at it, if you are a TMNF player and you upgrade to United, then you have just increased your chances of being noticed at TMX by 250%.

Food for thought! - If you believe statistics, that is.
